Film & Discussion: Kulturhäuser der DDR
It’s movie central here at the Goethe-Zentrum lately and here’s another one to mark in your diary! We’re hosting this one with the help of Georgia Tech:
Kulturhäuser der DDR
When: Thursday, April 3, 2014
Where: Georgia Institute of Technology, 216 Bobby Dodd Way, Stephen C. Hall Building, Room 102, Atlanta, GA 30332
What it’s about:
In the 1950s the German Democratic Republic (GDR) built approximately a thousand ‘Kulturhäuser’ based on the Soviet attempt to promote an anti-fascist re-education of Germans. These institutions enabled the working class to participate in a wide range of cultural events, such as concerts, exhibitions, or theatrical performances with the overall goal to create an educated workforce.
In an effort to explore the ‘Kulturhäuser’, Peter Goedel and Helga Storch’s documentary “‘An der Saale hellem Strande’ – Ein Kulturhaus erzählt” presents the “Haus der Freundschaft”, the former cultural center that was built in the small village of Schkopau in 1952.
As well as the film screening, this event will feature lectures by both Helga Storch and Peter Goedel and a round table discussion.
So what are you waiting for? Mark that date in your calendar and we’ll see you there!
