IN PICTURES: August at the Goethe!
August is usually one of our quieter months here at the Goethe-Zentrum Atlanta, people are out of town on vacation, school’s out for summer and the weather is just too hot! But, that doesn’t mean we don’t have anything going on at all – quite the contrary! There is always something happening here! So, it’s time for a rundown of what went on in August. Are you sitting comfortably, then we’ll begin!
The International Charter School of Atlanta Opening
The International Charter School of Atlanta opened it’s doors at the beginning of the month and of course, we were there to celebrate with them! The school is a dual-language immersion statewide K-4th grade charter school that will offers French, German, Mandarin, and Spanish. The school aims to prepare students for a successful future, helping them to reach their academic and social potential by developing them into inquiring, multilingual, intercultural citizens of this global community that we live in. We’re hoping we can work with them much more in the future!
A Note on Opera: Mozart’s “Die Zauberflöte”
As with every second Tuesday in the month, August saw another edition of ‘A Note on Opera.’ This time, our teacher Mr. David Kerr, focused on Mozart’s “Die Zauberflöte.” Around 11 people packed into the classroom to learn a little more about this famous opera – about how “Die Zauberflöte” elevated the vaudeville of the German musical theater piece, “Singspiel” into the sublime, with transcendent music that takes stock figures and elevates them into fully-developed characters. The class also looked at how with this opera, Mozart set the trajectory that German opera would follow through Beethoven, Weber, Wagner, and Strauss. Another successful opera class! The next one is happening in a couple of weeks when the class will be looking at Mozart’s “Le nozze di Figaro.” – you can find out more about that here.
Bundesliga Breakfast 2015/16 Season Kick Off Party!
As you all know, we host a Bundesliga Soccer Breakfast every Saturday morning throughout the soccer season, where fans get up early and head to the Goethe-Zentrum Atlanta to watch some German soccer whilst tucking into a bagel, sipping on some coffee and catching up with friends old and new. So, when the summer was over and the time came around for the new season to start, we thought we would celebrate in style! We hosted a Season Kick Off Party – around 85 people packed into our auditorium to cheer on their German team! Fans tucked into a traditional German breakfast, coffee and of course beer because soccer wouldn’t be soccer without beer, even at 9:30am! Our friends from Ballschule USA also came along and entertained the children with some interesting ball games that had them thinking out of the box! A great time was had by all and we definitely celebrated the start of the season! This week we’ll be screening the match between Hannover 96 and Borussia Dortmund – make sure you don’t miss a goal by heading to our auditorium for 9:30am!
August also saw the start of a new era for the Goethe-Zentrum Atlanta and a new Language Program Director! We welcomed Ms. Susanne Schurman to our team of staff and she is fitting in perfectly! Susanne’s been involved with the Goethe-Zentrum Atlanta for a while now, you may have seen her around as she’s been teaching classes here 2014 but has now become a permanent fixture! Make sure you say ‘hallo’ if you see her around!
European Short Films and Summer Party!
The last Friday in August saw us really celebrating the end of summer with our Franco-German summer party! We teamed up with our colleagues at the Alliance Française d’Atlanta and screened a selection of European short films with many different themes, some of which definitely got the audience of around 140 people laughing! Then, during the intermission and after the second half, food and drinks were served and guests mixed and mingled! It was a fun, busy night and we’re already looking forward to our next event with our French colleagues!
So there you have it, August at the Goethe! Did you attend any of our events? Which was your favorite?
