IN PICTURE: July at the Goethe!
Summer is usually a little quieter around here but July has not been quiet at all! It seems there’s always something happening at the Goethe-Zentrum Atlanta and that is just how we like it! Ready for a run-down of July? Strap yourself in, here goes!
Germany’s Euro 2016 campaign continued, and sadly ended in July. Nearly 150 of you came to watch the extremely tense quarter-final game against Italy. After a 1-1 during normal time and no goals in extra time, the two teams went head to head in one of the longest penalty shoot outs of the tournament! Thankfully, Germany scored the winning penalty and made it through to the semi-finals!
Next up was tournament hosts France in the semi-final. Sadly, this game didn’t go as well for Germany. A penalty and a goal for France saw Germany out of the tournament and missing out on the final. It was sad faces all around at the Goethe-Zentrum Atlanta – we’re still World Champions though!
Summer Quarter Language Courses
July also saw the start of another quarter of classes! Our students started, or continued with their German language learning on July 12, 2016 and, with new classes on the agenda including workplace German and a series of lunch and learn sessions, we’re seeing more people coming through the doors and starting their language learning journey! We’re putting the finishing touches to our fall quarter classes right now – registration will be open next week so keep an eye out for updates! We’ve got some exciting new additions to the course list!
Georgia Dual Language Immersion Institute Conference
For three days in July we were at the Georgia Dual Language Immersion Institute Conference. It’s an event for beginning and experienced dual language immersion teachers and administrators or educational professionals that are interested in Dual Language Immersion that is organized by the Georgia Department of Education. We had a booth at the event and spoke to teachers, administrators and education professionals about the Goethe-Zentrum Atlanta, what we offer and how we can help them.
German Business and Education Summit
For the second year, we hosted the German Business and Education Summit at the Goethe-Zentrum Atlanta, along with the Georgia Department for Education and the German American Chambers of Commerce. It’s a chance for business and education leaders to come together to see how they can help shape the workforce of the future. Around 40 attendees listened to presentations and attended workshops before a little networking at the end.
German in the Workplace: Business Etiquette
July also saw the start of a new series of language courses at the Goethe-Zentrum Atlanta – German in the Workplace. These early morning classes aim to teach you the basics needed in the office to allow you to be able to communicate better with your German colleagues. We started off with a session on business etiquette, looking at the differences between a German and American office and learning some simple words to help you in your career. There was breakfast and networking too! The next one is on Friday, August 12, 2016 at 6:45am – 8:15am when we’ll be looking at the German job application process. If you’re hoping to work in Germany, this is definitely the course for you! Register now by clicking here.
Chamblee DSD Award Ceremony
Next this month, we honored students from Chamblee Middle School and Chamblee Charter High School. They came to the Goethe-Zentrum Atlanta to be presented with their certificates for passing the 2016 Deutsches Sprachdiplom DSD I and Deutsches Sprachdiplom DSD II examinations. Over 100 students and parents came to the ceremony which was full of proud parents and pleased students!
And that was July at the Goethe! Another busy month and, with the Goethe 40th Birthday Ball coming up in August, things are getting much busier! Look out for announcements about our fall programs coming soon!
