EVENT: Movie Night – Phillip Stölzls “Young Goethe in Love”

It’s time for another Goethe inspired program as we continue to celebrate 40 years of Goethe in Atlanta, this time with a movie night with the screening of Phillip Stölzls “Young Goethe in Love” with introductory remarks by Dr. Martin Kagel, A.G. Steer Professor at the University of Georgia.

About the film:

“Young Goethe in Love” is a German movie from 2010. The romantic drama focuses on the early years of Johann Wolfgang von Goethe who is about to become an aspirational author. Having failed his examination in law, Johann Wolfgang von Goethe falls in love with Charlotte Buff in 1772. His hopes for a life together with Lotte, however, seem unlikely as she is already promised to marry another man. He processes his disappointment and pain by writing “The Sorrows of Young Werther,” which turns out to be one of his greatest success as an author.

The film will be shown in German with English subtitles, approximate length, 100 minutes. Doors will open at 6:30pm for a wine and cheese reception with the program starting at 7:00pm

About the speaker:

Martin Kagel’s research and teaching interests include German literature and culture from the 18th through the 21st-century. He has worked extensively on the aesthetics of Jakob Michael Reinhold Lenz, the literary politics of Johann Gottfried Seume, Rolf Dieter Brinkmann’s poetry, and the writings of Hungarian-German-Jewish author George Tabori. In addition, he has published articles and book chapters on topics such as 20th-century philosophy of history (Karl Löwith), technology (Günther Anders), and the environment (Ludwig Klages), contemporary landscape design, gender and authorship, the 18th-century culture of friendship, and the connection between 18th-century German literati and the military. Kagel has been a Lilly Teaching Fellow and has received the Sandy Beaver Award for Excellence in Teaching and the Richard B. Russell Undergraduate Teaching Award. He is also a member of the University of Georgia Teaching Academy.
