IN PICTURES: December at the Goethe!
January has been so busy here at the Goethe-Zentrum Atlanta that we haven’t had chance to tell you about what happened in December! Phew! Ready for a rundown on last month? Read on people, read on!
Holiday Happy Hour
We kicked off December by teaming up with our colleagues at the Alliance Française to thank you, our donors, members, students and teachers at the Holiday Happy Hour. We gathered in the auditorium for festive drinks and traditional holiday treats from some mixing and mingling, catching up with old friends and meeting new ones.
German Career Day – Chestatee High School
December also saw the outreach department carrying out its last career day of the year at Chestatee High School in Gainesville. Here, we spoke to students about the importance of learning German as a second language and how this can benefit them in their future careers, especially in this region where there is high investment from German businesses.
Movie Night: Luther
Our Luther programming continued in December with the screening of Eric Till’s, “Luther.” Introductory remarks were given by Dr. Robin Huff, Senior Lecturer in German and French at Georgia State University along with a wine and cheese reception before the film.
A Note on Opera: Engelbert Humperdinck’s “Hänsel und Gretel“
We went for a Holiday theme with December’s A Note on Opera and looked at Engelbert Humperdinck’s “Hänsel und Gretel.“ Attendees hear how the opera has been linked to the Holiday season since its Weimar premiere on December 23, 1893 and how musically, it owes a great debt to Wagner but without the “heaviness” that often characterizes Wagner’s scores. The next A Note on Opera takes place on Monday, February 13, 2017 when the class will be looking at “A German in Paris: Giacomo Meyerbeer and Grand Opéra.” Click here for more information and to register for this event.
And there you have it, December at the Goethe! 2017 has started with a bang so make sure you check out the events we have going on and take a look at next months blog post to find out what you missed out on!
